Market colour

Barcelona's municipal markets are lit by a mix of tungsten bulbs and daylight that turns produce into a colour chart, and the vendors are thoroughly used to cameras.

La Boqueria

The front stalls are a tourist tax of colour; walk to the back for the fish counters and the bars where market workers eat at seven in the morning. Arrive before ten if you want space to work.

Mercat de Santa Caterina

The wavy multicoloured roof alone justifies the trip, and inside it is calmer and more local than its famous neighbour. Shoot the roof from the raised walkway at the entrance.

Mercat de Sant Antoni

A restored iron hall with the Sunday book and coin ring around it, where the frames are quieter and more old-Barcelona than anything you will find on the Rambla.
